Time for a periodical update of my recent work! In this update I’ll share some of the first shoots I did for Red Bull this summer, show some personal work with top climbers and finish with a special photo from the Feyenoord Kuip stadium.
Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five
Client: Red Bull
Location: several locations, including Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Amsterdam and Groningen
This was actually my first assignment for the Dutch division of Red Bull, and a great one at that. The Neymar Jr’s Five tournament is held worldwide, with each country’s winners being offered a ticket to Brazil to play in the tournament’s finals. What’s special about the games is that every time one side scores a goal, the other side loses one of their players. Both sides start out with five players, and once one of them is down to zero the game is over. My goal here was to shoot a general impression of the event and focus on getting at least a couple of cans in there. What I love about this brand is that even though these photos should of course feature some Red Bull, it’s not the primary goal, with the focus instead being on just shooting some strong images that showcase the action.
Red Bull Reign
Client: Red Bull
After shooting Neymar Jr’s Five, I got tasked with shooting the finals of the Red Bull Reign event in Rotterdam. Reign is basketbal tournament with small teams competing on half a pitch. The action is fast and intense and the games are short. I hadn’t shot basketbal before, so this was a nice experience to hone my skills and shoot some great action.
Top climbers: Loïc Timmermans and Alise Zvigule
Location: Eindhoven, Monk Bouldergym
As always, I shot a bunch of personal projects to add to my portfolio and just try some new things. This time round, I asked two of my climbing friends to shoot some photos in my local climbing gym Monk Bouldergym in Eindhoven. One of them is Alise Zvigule, a talented young climber from Latvia who actually just joined the national team to compete in bouldering World Cups. My focus here was to shoot a series of images that portrayed Alise and showed a bit of her character.
Second was Loïc Timmermans, a very strong young climber from Belgium. Loïc competes in the lead World Cups and regularly does quite well there, which earned him a sponsorship with Adidas Terrex and Five Ten some years ago. With Loïc, I focused on setting up a little training scenario, where he did some exercises on the campus board. These are wooden boxes climbers use to train climbing with no feet to get strong quickly. Training on campus boards is very tough, especially so when opting for the smaller rugs instead of big jugs for holds.
Feyenoord Kuip stadium friends tournament
At the end of the 2016-2017 football season in the Netherlands, Feyenoord were once again national champions, the last time this happened was about 17 years ago. Opel, one of Feyenoord’s major sponsors, hosted a small tournament where fans could compete on the holy pitch in the famous Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam. I was tasked with shooting an impression of this day, which was a special experience, walking the grass in this legendary stadium. In addition to shooting the impression of this event, I was able to capture one very special photo of a young fan contemplating future dreams in this unique environment.
